This is the story of the guns that have helped to shape the course of human history. The author traces the story of firearms from the first crude weapons of the medieval battlefield down to the formidable armoury of the twentieth-century soldier.
Each chapter takes a particular type of firearm and explains how it was created, how it improved upon its predecessor, and the drawbacks that made men look around for something better. The matchlock proved slow and cumbersome to handle. It was followed by the greatly superior wheel-lock, which because of its complexity, never really replaced it as a standard weapon.
Then came the flintlock, whose supremacy was virtually unchallenged for nearly 200 years. Due attention is given to the ingenuity of men in adapting weapons to meet the particular needs of the sportsman, the hunter, and the colonist in the New World.'
